Rank by marks at risk, not by anxiety
Assignments usually carry more marks than a single graded quiz, but they also take far longer. Divide the marks by the hours the task will realistically take and start with the highest number. It is unglamorous arithmetic and it is almost always right.
Then rank by recoverability
- A closed assignment is gone — no retake, no appeal.
- A missed graded quiz is also gone, but is worth fewer marks.
- A practice quiz can be done any time and should never displace either.
- Lab attendance quizzes are small individually but relentless in aggregate.
The real fix is upstream
Triage is damage control for a visibility problem. If you knew on day one that both assignments closed the same Thursday, you would have planned differently. The point of automated tracking is not to do the work for you — it is to make sure the collision never surprises you.
